n Hämeenlinna, one can explore the cuisine of Häme region. One can feel the spirit of the past in the renovated mansions of the nobility. In addition to these manor houses, Hämeenlinna has good modern restaurants and vineyards whose offerings are worth tasting. Häme is located in the middle of Southern Finland. It is crossed by two big and historic roads: the Ox Road of Häme towards the west and The Ylinen Viipuri Road towards the east. As a result, the cuisine of Häme has received influences from the East and the West. Various casseroles, such as potato, carrot and rutabaga casseroles, which are parts of Häme cuisine, are today eaten in the whole of Finland at Christmas time. The manor houses of Häme have put their mark on the local food culture. The buffet tables of the nobility who lived in these houses were laid with salads, puddings, forcemeat and jellies, and, of course, with different fish dishes and casseroles. One of the most common fish in Häme is the bream, which can be caught in the springtime. Crayfish were eaten at the manors as well, following the example of the Swedes. So Häme became the centre of crayfish catching. Crayfish were also transported to Saint Petersburg to be eaten by that city’s nobility.

Lepaa Vineyard is a popular attraction. Every year approximately 40,000 people visit this vineyard which produces berry and fruit wines. The vineyard has operated since 1995 when Finland allowed private vineyards to produce wine for general consumption. One can tour the garden, take part in a “wine navigation” game and, of course, taste different wines. The most popular wine here is Lepaan Anna, an apple wine that gets its zesty taste from white currant and gooseberry.
